Aurora Open #2: GY Sac

Hi guys,
I’ve only been playing this deck once in the Aurora Open #2 but it gave me the win 3-2 against Donpork’s BG Ramp in the 3rd place match.

GY Sac is a very pleasant deck to play, there are so many synergies and the land placement is very important. I’d say it is the one of the hardest to play decently right now.

Pros: Fun, really interesting, makes you think twice about every action, only 6 special lands required, strong against aggro because of the Bone Collectors.
Cons: Hard to play at first, can be easily ruined by a bad draw (too many soul eaters in hand), weak against Burn decks (a lot of little creatures, targets for the Seifers Wraths, no heal and not an agressive deck).

My first base is the GY Sac from Ranma, another French player, whose particularity is to run Eredon, Voice of All which gives every creature in hand or deck +1/+1 when it dies. It can be very powerful when you play it early since you don’t have a lot of events in the deck.
My version is a bit different though, I don’t run Time of Legends because I don’t have it and I didn’t want to craft it. I’m running 2x Soul Drains to be more efficient against Y rush and SD is super versatile. I also run 2 Last Nightmares to counter the Azure Skywhales which are played a lot in this meta. It is a great tool to remove big threats when your Soul Eaters aren’t out yet.

Gameplay: You want to put your lands defensively to collect as early as possible. Bone Collectors, Village Elders and Sky Yaks are the best tools to quickly harvest Faeria. Your goal is to sacrifice (hence the name of the deck) your creatures to grow your Soul Eaters quickly and get them out when they are around 8/8.
Flash Salmon are a great tool to cycle your deck, grow your Bone Collectors quickly or even to put some agressive land near your opponent’s wells/orb.

Some match-ups insights:
GB Ramp: Against GB Ramp you want to get your Bone Collectors at 5HP before your opponent can Frog-Tosser them which would be deadly. The match-up is 50/50 I’d say, Last Nightmare saves the day against Whales when they swallow your Soul Eaters.
Rushes: Good match-up against Yellow rush, the Bone Collectors are super good. It’s a bit trickier against Red Rush though. You can be burned down quite quickly.
Mono-Blue: Not such a common day right now but be careful of the Frogifies/Mirror Phantasms.
Red Combat: Even though the deck is very common these days, I’ve not faced it enough to really have an idea for the match up. But you have to be careful of the mobility from the Horsemasters and try to Last Nightmare Seifer as quickly as possible if you don’t have a big Soul Eater out.

I wish you good luck mastering this awesome archetype, it will make you improve a lot.
Cheers, Leukos.
